Designed as a system

Why 12× and 50 mm belong together.

Twelve-power magnification makes distant features appear 20% larger than 10× in linear terms. The larger objectives preserve a useful 4.17 mm exit pupil while supplying that extra reach.

Ten-power and twelve-power apparent-size comparison Two circular views show the same distant subject. The subject in the twelve-power view is twenty percent larger in linear dimensions than in the ten-power view. 10× REFERENCE 12× VIPER HD SAME SUBJECT · SAME DISTANCE · 20% MORE LINEAR IMAGE SCALE

Read distant detail.

At the same viewing distance, 12× presents a subject at 1.2 times the linear image scale of 10×—useful when checking a far ridge, open face, wetland edge or coastal headland.

Forty-two millimetre and fifty millimetre objective comparison drawn to scale A 50 millimetre circle and a 42 millimetre circle are drawn at the same scale. The 50 millimetre objective has about 42 percent greater geometric area, without claiming 42 percent more image brightness. 42 mm 50 mm ~42% MORE AREA*

Start with a larger aperture.

A 50 mm objective has approximately 42% more geometric lens area than a 42 mm objective. Together with XR™ Plus anti-reflective coatings, it supports light transmission and detail in demanding field light.

50 ÷ 12 = 4.17Approximate exit-pupil diameter in millimetres.
96 m @ 1,000 mUseful context around a distant subject, from a 5.5° angular field.
16 mm eye reliefAdjustable eyecups support viewing with or without glasses; personal fit varies.
Tripod adaptableA supported view helps reveal the fine detail that 12× magnification delivers.

*Geometric area comparison only: π×(25 mm)² versus π×(21 mm)². It is not a claim of 42% greater image brightness; perceived performance also depends on the complete optical system, coatings, conditions and the viewer.

HD optical system

Keep the information in the image.

The 50 mm objectives begin the light path; select HD glass and premium prism and lens coatings work through the system to preserve resolution, contrast and colour fidelity at the eyepieces.

Simplified Viper HD 12x50 optical path Light enters a 50 millimetre objective, passes through select HD glass and a phase-corrected dielectric roof prism, then exits through an XR Plus coated ocular as an approximately 4.17 millimetre beam. 50 mm OBJECTIVE + HD GLASS DIELECTRIC ROOF PRISM XR PLUS OCULAR DETAIL, CONTRAST AND COLOUR THROUGH THE PATH 4.17 mm*
*Exit pupil is the objective diameter divided by magnification: 50 mm ÷ 12 = approximately 4.17 mm. Diagram is explanatory and not a literal engineering cutaway.
HD optical systemSelect glass elements support resolution, reduce chromatic aberration and maintain colour fidelity and edge-to-edge sharpness.
XR™ Plus coatingsAnti-reflective coatings on all air-to-glass surfaces maximise transmission for peak clarity and low-light performance.
Dielectric prismsMulti-layer prism coatings support a bright, clear and colour-accurate image.
Phase correctionA phase-correction coating on the roof prisms enhances resolution and contrast.
ArmorTek®An ultra-hard exterior-lens coating helps resist scratches, oil and dirt.
50 mm apertureThe large entrance lenses support a useful 4.17 mm calculated exit pupil at twelve power.
Field of view

96 metres of terrain at 1,000 metres.

A 5.5° angular field keeps enough surrounding terrain visible to search a face, follow moving wildlife and relocate a subject after lowering the binocular.

Steadier at twelve power

Turn magnification into usable detail.

Higher magnification also makes hand movement more visible. For a quick look, a balanced stance and gentle grip work well; for longer sessions, brace the binocular or mount it so the view settles and fine detail becomes easier to read.

Brace the bodyPlant both feet, tuck elbows towards the ribs and use the brow or eyecups as a light third contact point.
Use field supportRest forearms against a pack, rail, post or solid surface without pressing the objective barrels into it.
Add a tripodFor extended glassing, a compatible adapter and tripod reduce arm fatigue and image movement.
New Zealand field roles

Built around distance and open views.

The Viper HD 12×50 is at its most convincing when the subject is distant and the landscape offers room to search—with enough optical quality to inspect detail once it is found.

High-country hunting

Scan alpine faces, tussock basins, river flats and opposing ridges, then study movement, body shape and distinguishing detail before planning the next move.

Birds and wildlife

Observe waterfowl, shorebirds and wildlife across wetlands, estuaries and open habitat where extra reach matters more than an ultra-wide scanning view.

Coast and headlands

Pick out vessels, seabirds and marine wildlife from a stable land position. Waterproof construction is for weather protection; the binocular is not presented as a submersible marine optic.

Rural observation

Follow activity across farm margins, bush edges, large reserves, outdoor events and distant landmarks where twelve power can separate small features from the background.

All-condition construction

Prepared for changing field weather.

O-ring sealing, argon purging, rubber armour, shock-resistant construction and ArmorTek® exterior-lens protection support reliable use through rain, temperature changes and everyday field knocks.

Waterproof

O-ring sealing is designed to resist harsh weather and prevent moisture from entering the optical system.

Argon fogproofing

Argon-gas purging helps prevent internal fogging across a wide range of temperatures.

Shockproof

Rugged construction and rubber armour are designed to withstand the impacts and knocks of outdoor use.

ArmorTek®

The ultra-hard coating on the exterior glass helps resist scratches, fingerprints, oil and dirt.

Personal setup

Tune the view once. Focus normally after.

Correct barrel spacing, eyecup height and dioptre calibration help form one clean circular image and let both eyes reach focus together.

Set eyecups and spacing

Extend the eyecups when viewing without glasses or lower them for most eyewear. Pivot the barrels until both views merge into one complete circle without dark edge shadows.

Focus the left channel

Choose a detailed target about 18 metres away. Cover the right objective or close the right eye, then use the centre wheel to focus the left-eye image sharply.

Calibrate the right dioptre

Cover the left objective or close the left eye. Unlock and rotate the right dioptre until sharp, then lock it. Use only the centre wheel for ordinary viewing.

GlassPak™ included

Carry the 50 mm optic close and protected.

The supplied GlassPak™ binocular harness keeps the Viper HD at chest height for quick access while distributing its approximate 816 g weight across the shoulders. Tether points add security during active field use.

Compatible ways to glass longer.

A tripod adapter is the most direct upgrade for extended 12× observation. A larger optional harness adds storage when the included GlassPak™ needs expanding.

Care in the field and at home

Protect the coatings. Preserve the view.

Remove grit first

  • Blow away dust and grit before touching a lens surface.
  • Use a clean optical lens cloth and products intended for coated glass.
  • Do not use clothing, paper tissue or an abrasive dry wipe.

Dry before storage

Fit the covers whenever the binocular is not in use. If it becomes wet, remove the covers and allow the optic and harness to dry fully before closing them in the GlassPak™.

Keep the seal intact

Internal components are permanently lubricated and need no added lubricant. Do not disassemble the binocular beyond removing the supplied covers or tripod-socket cap.

Buyer questions

Viper HD 12×50 FAQs.

Straight answers for shoppers comparing long-range hunting and wildlife binoculars in New Zealand.

What does 12×50 mean?

The first number is 12× magnification: a distant subject appears twelve times larger in angular terms than to the unaided eye. The second is the 50 mm diameter of each objective lens.

Why choose 50 mm objectives?

The larger aperture gathers more available light than a smaller objective of otherwise similar design. Here it also maintains an approximately 4.17 mm exit pupil at 12× magnification.

Can the Viper HD 12×50 be handheld?

Yes. A steady stance, light grip and braced elbows help. Because 12× also magnifies hand movement, a tripod or solid rest is useful for long sessions and the finest distant detail.

Is it suitable for glasses?

The adjustable eyecups and 16 mm eye relief are designed for viewing with or without eyewear. Frame shape, prescription and facial anatomy affect whether every user sees the complete field.

Is 12×50 suitable for birdwatching?

It suits distant birds across estuaries, wetlands, coastlines and open habitat. For close woodland birds or very fast subjects, a lower-power binocular generally offers a wider field and steadier handheld view.

Is the Viper HD 12×50 waterproof?

Vortex describes it as waterproof, fogproof and shockproof. It is O-ring sealed and argon-gas purged for field weather and temperature changes; no submersion depth is claimed for this model.
