HD optical system

Fine detail survives the optical path.

Select glass elements are optimised for resolution and reduced chromatic aberration, while premium coatings preserve transmission, contrast and colour fidelity from the 42 mm objectives to the eyepieces.

XR™ Plus coatingsUltimate anti-reflective coatings on every air-to-glass surface maximise transmission for clarity and low-light performance.
Dielectric prismsMulti-layer prism coatings support a bright, clear and colour-accurate image.
Phase correctionRoof-prism phase coating enhances resolution and contrast where fine structure matters.
ArmorTek®An ultra-hard exterior-lens coating helps resist scratches, oil and dirt.
Viper HD optical path Simplified cutaway showing light entering a 42 mm objective lens, passing through a phase-corrected dielectric roof prism and XR Plus coated ocular group before reaching the viewer’s eye. 42 MM OBJECTIVE DIELECTRIC ROOF PRISM XR PLUS OCULAR REFINED FROM OBJECTIVE TO EYE
The system combines select glass, XR™ Plus anti-reflective coatings, dielectric prism coatings and phase correction so useful image information is retained throughout the roof-prism path.
Field of view

114 metres of terrain at 1,000 metres.

A 6.5° angular field balances ten-power reach with enough surrounding context to search open faces, follow moving wildlife and reacquire a subject after lowering the binocular.

Viper HD 10×42 field of view Diagram illustrating a 6.5 degree angular field, equal to approximately 114 metres of visible width at a distance of 1,000 metres. 6.5° 114 M FIELD WIDTH 1,000 M OBSERVER DISTANT TERRAIN
Controls and connection points

Fast, familiar control.

A central focus wheel, locking right-eye dioptre and adjustable eyecups make repeatable setup intuitive, while the concealed front socket accepts a compatible binocular tripod adapter.

Move keyboard focus to a numbered marker, hover it with a pointer, or tap it on a touch screen to reveal the corresponding part name.

Front-facing Vortex Viper HD 10×42 binocular diagram with seven markers identifying the twist-up eyecups, centre focus wheel, viewer’s locking right-eye dioptre shown on the left side of the image, open hinge, strap lugs, 42 mm objective lenses and tripod adapter socket
1Twist-up eyecups

Raise for viewing without glasses or collapse for most spectacle wearers.

2Centre focus

Moves both optical channels together for fast near-to-far focusing.

3Locking right-eye dioptre

Pull upward to unlock the ring, rotate it to balance the viewer’s right optical channel, then press down to protect the setting. It appears on the left in this front-facing image.

4Open hinge

Adjusts the 55–74 mm interpupillary distance and gives the fingers a secure hold.

5Strap lugs

Accept the comfort neck strap or GlassPak tether straps supplied in the box.

642 mm objectives

Gather light for a practical 4.2 mm exit pupil in a portable full-size body.

7Adapter socket

Remove the front cap to fit a compatible Vortex binocular tripod adapter.

Field handling

Balanced for all-day carry.

At 24.9 oz / approximately 706 g, the Viper HD 10×42 balances a full-size optical system with a body designed for repeated observation and longer days on foot.

True open hingeThe true open-hinge layout reduces bulk and creates a natural wraparound grip.
17 mm eye reliefAdjustable eyecups support a comfortable, full viewing position with or without glasses.
Rubber armourTextured external protection supplies a durable, non-slip hold in changing conditions.
Tripod adaptableAdd a compatible adapter for extended glassing, vehicle-window use or a steadier view.
10× magnification

Distance becomes readable detail.

Ten-times magnification makes a distant subject appear ten times larger in angular size than it does to the unaided eye. A bird at 100 metres fills roughly the same amount of your view as it would from 10 metres without magnification.

That extra reach helps reveal plumage, antler points, facial markings and small changes in posture while leaving both eyes open for a natural view.

100 mActual example distance from observer to subject.
≈ 10 mApproximate unaided-eye distance giving a similar apparent subject size.

Viper® HD signature

Carry farther. Glass longer.

Viper HD is built around a practical equation: refine the light path, keep the full-size instrument manageable, and make personal settings easy to repeat.

01 Optical refinement

HD select glass, XR™ Plus anti-reflective coatings, dielectric prism coatings and phase correction work together through the optical path.

02 Manageable build

A true open hinge and 24.9 oz / 706 g carrying weight keep full-size 10×42 performance practical on longer routes.

03 Repeatable ergonomics

The locking right-eye dioptre protects a personal setting while the large centre wheel handles normal focusing.

Result Longer confident observation

Less time recovering the view and more time reading fine structure, movement and behaviour in the landscape.

Objective and exit pupil

Why 42 mm works so well at 10×.

The “42” is the diameter of each front objective lens. It provides substantially more light-gathering area than smaller daytime designs while keeping the Viper practical for handheld observation and all-day carry.

Relative binocular objective-lens diameters Four proportionally sized circles compare 25, 32, 42 and 50 millimetre objective lenses, with the Viper HD 42 millimetre size highlighted. 25 MM 32 MM 42 MM 50 MM VIPER 10×42 CIRCLES SHOWN IN PROPORTION TO OBJECTIVE DIAMETER
42 ÷ 10 = 4.2

A 4.2 mm exit pupil.

The exit pupil is the small disc of light leaving each eyepiece. At 4.2 mm, it gives the eye a practical target to align with, while the Viper’s XR™ Plus coatings help preserve useful transmission as daylight fades or cloud cover builds.

Move the binocular a few centimetres from your face and you can see this bright circle floating in each eyepiece.

Exit-pupil diameter is not a complete image-quality score. Glass, coatings, contrast, atmospheric conditions and correct eye position also affect what you can resolve.

17 mm Specified eye relief
Eye relief featurette

Set the distance. See the full circle.

Eye relief is the space between the rear lens and your eye while the complete field remains visible. The Viper HD 10×42 is specified at 17 mm and uses twist-up eyecups to help place your eyes consistently.

1
Without glassesRaise the eyecups until they rest comfortably around the eyes without forcing the binocular into your face.
2
With glassesBegin with the eyecups fully lowered so the lenses of your glasses can sit closer to the eyepieces.
3
Check the viewAdjust barrel spacing and eye position until both sides merge into one even circle without dark crescents or sudden blackouts.
Glasses fit differently. Seventeen millimetres provides useful working distance for many spectacle wearers, though frame depth and face shape can still affect access to the outer edge of the field.
1.8 m close focus

Long-range reach, near-detail control.

The focus wheel can bring a subject into focus from approximately 1.8 metres away, giving the Viper useful reach into garden, feeder and equipment-detail distances as well as open terrain.

Viper HD close-focus distance An observer at the left focuses on a small bird and flower 1.8 metres away, while the landscape continues into the distance. 1.8 M APPROXIMATE CLOSE-FOCUS DISTANCE FOCUS CONTINUES TO DISTANCE
Garden and feederStudy plumage, eyes and feeding behaviour when a bird lands surprisingly close.

Everyday versatility

One 10×42. Four natural roles.

The combination of 10× reach, a 114 m field at 1,000 m, 1.8 m close focus and a refined 706 g open-hinge body suits far more than a single type of observation.

Birdwatching

Use the field width to locate movement, then let 10× magnification separate head patterns, wing bars and behaviour at distance. Close focus also helps around feeders and gardens.

Nature observation

Scan shorelines, wetlands, bush edges and open country while keeping enough detail to study animals without walking closer and changing their behaviour.

General observation

Follow activity across harbours, farms, reserves, lookouts and outdoor events with a full-size view that remains practical to carry and share.

Hunting

Search open faces, bush margins and distant clearings, then inspect body shape, antler detail and movement before deciding whether to keep watching.

All-condition construction

Built for changing conditions.

O-ring sealing, argon purging, shock-resistant construction and ArmorTek® exterior-lens protection help the Viper HD remain ready through changing weather, temperature swings and repeated field use.

Waterproof

O-ring sealing is designed to resist harsh weather and prevent moisture from entering the optical system.

Fogproof

Argon-gas purging helps prevent internal fogging through wide temperature changes.

Shockproof

Rugged construction is designed to withstand the impacts and knocks that come with outdoor use.

ArmorTek®

The ultra-hard exterior-lens coating helps protect against scratches, fingerprints, oil and dirt.

Personal setup

Tune the binocular to your eyes.

Set the eyecups and barrel spacing, then unlock and calibrate the right-eye dioptre once. Press the ring down to protect the setting and use the centre focus wheel for normal near-to-far viewing.

Set eyecups and spacing

Extend the eyecups when viewing without glasses or collapse them for most eyewear. Pivot the barrels until the two views merge into one clean circular image without dark edge shadows.

Focus the left channel

Choose a detailed object about 20 yards / 18 metres away. Cover the right objective or close the right eye, then use the centre wheel until the left-eye image is sharply focused.

Calibrate the right dioptre

Cover the left objective or close the left eye. Pull the right dioptre ring towards the eye, rotate it until the image is sharp, then press it down to lock the setting. Normal focusing can now be handled with the centre wheel alone.

Care in the field and at home

Keep the view clear.

Clean coated lenses carefully

  • Blow away dust and grit before touching a lens surface.
  • Use a clean lens cloth and products intended for coated optical glass.
  • A small amount of water or pure alcohol can help release stubborn dried water spots.

Protect and store

Fit the objective covers and Rainguard whenever the binocular is not in use. If it becomes wet, remove the covers and let the optic dry fully before returning it to the GlassPak™ case.

Keep the sealed system intact

Internal components are permanently lubricated and need no additional lubricant. Do not disassemble the binocular beyond removing the supplied covers or tripod-socket cap.
