Back to Astronomy and Astro Photography

This telescope was my way of getting back to astronomy and astro photography after a lapse of about 40 years when things were done with film and DIY reflecting telescopes, 8 and 6 inch being the norm. Any refractor scope of more than 3 inches aperture being totally beyond reach because of cost. My how things have changed with the cost of quality equipment and the digital age so I decided to make sure that I took advantage of what I considered a better than good all round option and my choice was this Skywatcher SEPRIT ED Triplet APO Refractor scope and I have not been disapointed with my choice. I've only had three nights of use and have taken the best shots of the moon ever, the Orion Nebula in all it's glory with only a few seconds exposure and the Horse Head nebula, also in Orion, considered to be a difficult subject as a real test for this instrument. The clarity of the images and the triple APO lens with absolutely no colour fringing, over the entire flat field was up to spec as one would expect from such a instrument. To get this sort of performance some 40-50 years back one would have to have a 6 to 8i inch object glass refractor to match and even then it would probably suffer from defects. Great scope. Well engineered, Top kit. To get the best one must also invest in a high end mount, goto if poss, and for astro imaging at least a suitable DSLR camera or better still purpose built astro camera's. I went for the ZWO equipment but there are many options to choose from. My the skies be clear.

Esprit 100 is a beast!

Love the Esprit 100. Fantastic scope. Won Skywatcher DSO and overall Astrophotograper of the year 2022 with it, in my first year of starting the hobby. I think that says a lot about its quality more than anything along with the Skywatcher EQ6 mount. When you buy quality gear like this, you are not wasting time wrestling it to get the job done and you have nothing else to blame, all there is left is to put in the time to learn how to use it and keep practicing / improving with the post processing. The team at Jacobs were helpful to point out the optical qualities of this scope versus other options when I was originally searching just over a year ago, it is worth every cent it costs once you see those exposures coming through looking extremely sharp corner to corner (atleast on APSC sensor) and importantly, without false colour artefacts. I have never used this for visual astronomy but for imaging it is the best mass produced scope you can get with a very advantageous FOV for the DSO we have available to us in Aotearoa.
