Telescope Collimation
Most reflectors and SCTs will need collimating occasionally. It can be tricky and time-consuming, and if you don't have the time or the tools to do it yourself we offer collimation as a service at our Birkenhead retail shop.
Reflectors
Two mirrorsIs your telescope not as sharp as it used to be? Having trouble focusing, with the image generally not looking right? It might be time for a collimation.
Reflectors have two mirrors, a primary and a secondary, that need to be aligned for the telescope to focus correctly. If you see the image below when looking at a star either in or out of focus, your reflector requires collimation.
Cassegrains
Lower maintenanceCassegrain telescopes are sturdier and require less collimation than reflectors, but like any highly tuned instrument they require maintenance at some point. Spotting an out-of-collimation Cassegrain is easy: defocus a star and check whether the black circle in the middle is centred.
When you defocus a star you should see the image on the left. If you're seeing the image on the right, your scope requires collimation.
