Built to move with the view.Vortex Mountain Pass Tripod Kit

Purpose-built for glassing far from the truck, Mountain Pass balances packability, stability and value. Its machined-aluminium legs support large binoculars and spotting scopes, while the two-way pan-and-tilt head gives you smooth, intuitive control when wildlife moves or the next detail appears across the valley.

Packability without the compromise

A steady platform for serious glassing.

Mountain Pass is made for the moments when hand-held viewing is no longer enough: identifying distant wildlife, reading detail through a spotting scope, following movement across open country, or holding a camera precisely on a scene.

  • Two-way pan-and-tilt head

Simple handle control releases the head for movement, adds panning resistance or locks the view in place. The result is controlled scanning without a complicated set of controls.

  • Arca-Swiss compatible mount

The supplied quick-release plate makes it easy to attach compatible optics and cameras, while some Arca-Swiss compatible optics can mount directly to the head.

  • Machined-aluminium support

A 1.39 kg tripod supports equipment up to 10 kg, giving larger spotting scopes and binocular setups a secure platform without moving into a bulky studio-style system.

  • Independent four-section legs

Each leg extends independently with flip-lever locks and can be set to one of three angles for low viewing positions, sloping ground or a wider stance.

  • Stability when conditions change

Rubber feet hold on smooth surfaces, and the detachable hook below the centre column accepts additional ballast when wind or uneven terrain demands more stability.

Mapped controls and connection points

Know every working part.

Tap a numbered marker to jump to its explanation, or use the complete key below the image. The map remains fully usable without scripts.

Eight numbered links identify the major controls and support features on the Vortex Mountain Pass tripod.

  1. Arca-Swiss compatible quick-release plate

Remove the plate with the side locking knob, secure the plate to a compatible optic or camera, then return it to the head and tighten the knob.

  2. Two-way pan-and-tilt head

Provides a controlled vertical tilt and smooth horizontal scan for following wildlife, surveying a landscape or positioning a camera.

  3. Two-piece centre column

Raises the head by up to 28.7 cm. The lower column section can be removed when the tripod needs to work closer to the ground.

  4. Three-angle leg pivot locks

Set each leg independently to 25°, 49° or 70° for low setups, a broader footprint or uneven ground.

  5. Flip-lever leg locks

Release, extend and secure each telescoping leg section quickly. Independent adjustment helps keep the head positioned correctly on changing terrain.

  6. Detachable counterweight hook

Hang suitable ballast beneath the centre column to increase stability in windy conditions. The hook unscrews with the lower centre-column section.

  7. Rubber feet

Provide a secure contact point on smooth and hard surfaces while helping protect floors and delicate ground.

  8. Tilt and panning locking handle

Turn counter-clockwise to free the head. Turn clockwise to add the desired resistance or lock the view in place.

Binocular mounting note: binoculars require a compatible binocular tripod adapter, sold separately. A spotting scope or camera with a suitable mounting interface can use the supplied plate, while some Arca-Swiss compatible optics can attach directly.
Fast field setup

From packed to on target.

The controls are deliberately simple, so height, stance and head movement can be adjusted without taking attention away from the view.

Head control

Set tilt and panning resistance.

  1. Turn the handle counter-clockwise until the head moves freely.
  2. Position the optic at the desired angle.
  3. Turn clockwise to add controlled resistance for panning or continue until the head is locked.

Leg stance

Choose one of three leg angles.

  1. Pull the leg-angle pivot lock outward.
  2. Move the leg toward the required 25°, 49° or 70° position.
  3. Push the pivot lock back in and move the leg to the nearest positive angle stop.

Working height

Extend each leg independently.

  1. Flip a leg lock open.
  2. Slide that section to the desired length.
  3. Close the lever fully, then repeat as needed for the remaining sections and legs.

Optic connection

Secure the quick-release plate.

  1. Turn the side locking knob counter-clockwise and remove the plate.
  2. Attach the plate firmly to the compatible optic or camera and fold its D-ring flat.
  3. Seat the plate back in the head, then turn the locking knob clockwise until secure.
Operating envelope

Low, tall and ready to travel.

Three independent leg angles and a two-piece centre column give Mountain Pass a broad working range without sacrificing a compact packed profile.

Useful for seated observation, low camera positions and a wide, stable stance.

Maximum operating height142.2 cm

Raises the optic for standing or elevated viewing while retaining full head control.

Maximum centre-column extension28.7 cm

Fine-tunes viewing height after the legs are placed. For best stability, extend the legs before raising the centre column more than necessary.
