Carson IS-200 HookUpz™ 2.0 Smartphone Optic Adapter

Compatibility

Product model	IS-200
Product name	HookUpz™ 2.0 Smartphone Optic Adapter
Phone compatibility method	Phone must fit in portrait orientation between the sizing-guide arrows shown in the manual.
Primary camera requirement	Phone should be aligned using the primary camera, typically the 1x wide-angle camera on multi-camera phones.
Multi-camera phone note	Some phones may require selecting the primary camera manually. Carson refers users to its multicam guidance for iPhone 13 Pro and later.
Eyepiece fit range	25mm to 60mm external eyepiece diameter.
Sizing guide reference	Manual shows 25mm and 58mm sizing circles and notes that eyepieces up to 60mm can be accommodated by pushing firmly to secure.
Maximum practical eyepiece note	For large eyepieces around 58mm to 62mm, the adapter must be opened fully. Eyepieces beyond 62mm external diameter should not be used with this adapter and optic lock.
Irregular eyepieces	Does not fit irregular-shaped eyepieces.
Riflescope compatibility	Not recommended for riflescopes. The manual states that riflescopes usually require long eye relief, making the image very small on the phone screen, and Carson does not suggest firearm use with the adapter due to recoil.

Use and Setup Notes

Phone Insertion

Rotate to unlock the top clamp.
Slide the top clamp into the uppermost position.
Insert the phone into the left clamp.
Squeeze and pull the right clamp past the edge of the phone.
Release the right clamp to secure the phone.
Ensure the phone is as flat as possible against the adapter.

Camera Alignment

Slide the phone vertically and horizontally until the primary camera is aligned with the camera cutout.
Use the alignment screw to centre the camera within the cutout.
Slide the top clamp down against the phone edge.
Lock the top clamp using the clamp lever.
If the phone cannot align correctly, the included alternate clamp can be installed using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver.

Attaching to an Optic

If the optic has fold-down eyecups, fold them down before attaching the adapter.
If using binoculars, make sure the left eyecup is fully extended before connecting.
Squeeze the optic clamp arms to open the clamp.
Place the clamp over the eyepiece and release.
Ensure the adapter sits flush against the eyepiece.
Use the optic lock if additional securing is required.

Photography and Video Tips

Tap the object of interest on the phone screen to autofocus.
For video, tap and hold the object of interest for about one second to lock focus, then tap again to release focus lock.
Pinch the phone screen to enlarge the image if required.
For long sessions, use a battery case or phone charger to prevent phone battery drain.
To reduce shake, use the optical device on a tripod where possible.
Many phones have built-in image stabilisation features; turn these on if available.
If the phone does not have stabilisation, a third-party camera app with stabilisation may help.

Important Limitations

Riflescopes	Not recommended. Riflescopes generally require long eye relief, which can make the image very small on the phone screen. Firearm-mounted use is not suggested due to recoil.
Eyepieces over 62mm	Should not be used with the adapter and optic lock.
Irregular eyepieces	Not suitable for irregular-shaped eyepieces.
Flash use	Flash is not required for optic use and may be covered by the adapter. The manual recommends turning flash off.
Indoor glare	Reflections or glare may occur under indoor lighting. Avoid overhead lighting, change the lighting angle relative to the phone, and turn off flash.
Leaving attached	Do not leave the adapter attached to the eyepiece when not in use, especially on large eyepieces near the upper fit range.

Troubleshooting

Issue	Likely Cause / Fix
Image is not centred or not a complete round image	Adjust vertical alignment using the top clamp and horizontal alignment using the alignment screw. Check the phone is flat against the adapter and the adapter is flush with the optic.
Glare or reflections appear in the image	Avoid overhead lighting, change the lighting angle relative to the phone, and make sure flash is turned off.
Top clamp touches the rounded corner of the phone	This is normal on some phone models. Push the clamp as flush to the rounded edge as possible and lock the top clamp as normal.
Other phone camera or flash is covered	Use the primary camera and turn flash off. Flash may be covered because it is not needed when using an optic.
Phone camera will not line up with the camera cutout	Install the included alternate top clamp using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, then repeat alignment.

Lens Spacer Use

The lens spacer is not required for most phones. Depending on the phone and optic combination, the spacer may increase the image size by adding distance between the eyepiece and the camera. It should be used only when needed for the specific phone and optic setup.

Cleaning and Storage

Clean only with a soft, damp microfiber cloth.
Do not use chemicals.
Do not use abrasives.
Do not use solvents.
Store in a dry area at room temperature.
