Understanding the format

Why 12× and 50 mm work together.

Twelve power brings distant features closer for identification across open ground. The larger 50 mm objectives provide a generous entrance aperture for the Elite Optical System, while the resulting 4.2 mm exit pupil keeps the format practical in changing outdoor light.

A 50 mm circle has about 42% more geometric area than a 42 mm circle. This is an aperture-area comparison only—not a measured claim about brightness or transmission, which also depend on the complete optical system.

The trade-off is visible movement. Twelve power also enlarges hand shake, so a firm stance, braced elbows or tripod support can make fine detail easier to hold during longer glassing sessions. A tripod is helpful, not mandatory.

The official specification is 278 ft at 1,000 yd. Converted at the same angular scale, that is approximately 92.7 m at 1,000 m—enough context to scan an open face while retaining the extra detail of 12× magnification.

A field number describes scene width, not image quality. In practice, this 12× view favours deliberate scanning of open country and distant subjects; lower-power binoculars generally feel faster when following close, erratic movement.

Handling and control

Built around the adjustments you actually use.

The redesigned magnesium chassis keeps the binocular rigid without unnecessary bulk. An improved armour texture adds grip, while the large central wheel and right-eye dioptre keep normal focusing familiar.

The general-purpose option for comfortable everyday glassing.

Designed to help eyeglass wearers access the stated 15.5 mm eye relief.

Hand-held freedom · supported precision

Settle the 12× view when the observation takes time.

The BX-3 can be used hand-held, but small movements become more visible at 12×. Choose the amount of support to match how long you are glassing and how fine the detail needs to be.

Optional support hardware sold separately

A rotating ¼-20 tripod port is already built in.

The integrated interface removes the need to improvise around the hinge. Attach compatible support hardware and rotate the binocular to the viewing angle you need. Leupold’s Quick-Stem Binocular Tripod Adapter (Part 182417) uses a universal stud and an Arca-Swiss compatible base with its own ¼-20 thread.

A natural fit for open-country New Zealand viewing.

The 12×50 balance makes the most sense where distance is a regular part of the view: alpine faces, river flats, coastal edges, farmland, broad clearings and stationary observation points.

First-use setup

Set the fit once. Focus normally after that.

This model uses the right-eyepiece dioptre procedure in Leupold’s binocular manual. Make the calibration carefully and the centre wheel then handles normal near-to-far focusing for both eyes.

Choose eyecups and set eye spacing.Fit the Form-Fit eyecup style that suits you, then move the barrels through the 58–74 mm IPD range until both views merge into one clean circle.
Pick a detailed target about 90 metres away.Leupold’s manual specifies about 100 yards. A sign, textured tree or building edge provides a clear focusing reference.
Focus the left channel.Cover the right objective lens and turn the central focus wheel until the image seen by your left eye is crisp.
Balance the right channel.Cover the left objective, then turn the dioptre ring around the right eyepiece until the right-eye image is equally sharp.
Return to normal viewing.Uncover both objectives. Leave the dioptre at that personal setting and use only the central wheel to focus at different distances.
