After positioning and connection, the Seestar app can locate a target, slew the telescope, track it and begin imaging. The integrated workflow removes the need to assemble a separate telescope, mount, camera, controller and capture computer.

50 mm aperture

More light and resolving power for fine celestial detail.

A 50 mm aperture has nearly three times the light-gathering area of a 30 mm aperture. Combined with the large 1/1.2-inch telephoto sensor, it is designed to reveal faint structures in deep-sky objects while retaining detail on the lunar surface and in safely filtered solar targets.

Expand the frame without giving up the telephoto view.

Mosaic capture automatically joins multiple telephoto frames into a broader composition. It is useful for large nebulae and target groups that extend beyond a single 2.8° portrait field, with stitched output available at up to 8K resolution.

Redesigned optical system

Four-element APO optics with ED glass.

The telephoto channel uses a four-element apochromatic lens with extra-low-dispersion glass. The design is intended to control chromatic aberration and render smaller, cleaner stars across the 4K field while a folded light path keeps the body portable.

4K dual-lens system

Detailed deep-sky imaging and expansive wide-field capture.

Both channels record 2160 × 3840 images at 1×. The telephoto camera uses an 8.3 MP OmniVision OS08B10 sensor behind the 260 mm f/5.2 optical system, while the 8.3 MP IMX586 wide camera covers a 63° portrait field through a 6 mm f/1.75 lens.

A large celestial database, ready to point and track.

Search or select a target in the Seestar app and the telescope automatically positions itself, begins tracking and guides you into capture. The database includes more than 80,000 deep-sky objects and 600,000 stars.

In-app finishing tools

One-tap enhancement or more deliberate editing.

Smart Enhancement can apply noise reduction and refine the captured image. Additional controls include star reduction, star removal, crop, brightness, contrast and saturation, allowing a polished result without moving every session to a desktop editor.

Keep using it when the deep sky is not the subject.

Capture lunar surface detail, safely filtered sunspots and eclipses, or use the telephoto channel for distant scenery, wildlife and events. The supplied magnetic solar filter must always be installed before the main camera is directed at the Sun.

10,000 mAh battery and 128 GB eMMC storage.

The internal battery is rated for up to nine hours in ZWO laboratory conditions. Approximately 100 GB of the 128 GB storage is available after system allocation, giving longer imaging plans more room to run.

Up to nine hours was measured by ZWO above 25°C in Alt-Azimuth Mode with telephoto stargazing enabled. Temperature, dew-heater use, wireless activity and operating mode can reduce actual runtime.

Plan Mode

Set the night’s targets and let Seestar work through them.

Plan Mode can recommend a sequence using the selected targets and observing conditions. Once confirmed, the telescope follows the schedule automatically rather than requiring attention at every change.

Equatorial Mode support

Longer exposures with the effects of field rotation reduced.

The S50 Pro can operate in Equatorial Mode with suitable support and accurate polar alignment. Its precision drive system is designed for near-zero backlash, smoother corrections and more efficient tracking. Exposures of up to 60 seconds are available only in Equatorial Mode.

Field-of-view comparison

Where the S50 Pro sits between the S50 and S30 Pro.

The telephoto channel’s 2.8° portrait field is substantially wider than the original S50’s 1.46° field while retaining a 50 mm aperture. The S30 Pro reaches a wider 4.6° telephoto field, but its smaller 30 mm aperture prioritises portability and framing over the S50 Pro’s light-gathering and resolving power.

Is the S50 Pro right for you?

A stronger fit when deep-sky detail matters most.

The S50 Pro is the model to choose when you want the convenience of a Seestar but do not want to step down from a 50 mm aperture to gain modern dual-camera features.

Choose the S50 Pro for

Fainter deep-sky targets, finer lunar and solar detail, a wider native telephoto field than the original S50, 4K output from both cameras, long planned sessions, and the ability to add Equatorial Mode or ASCOM Alpaca workflows later.

Consider the S30 Pro instead when

Minimum carry weight and the widest telephoto field are more important than 50 mm aperture. The S30 Pro is the smaller 1.65 kg travel-focused option; the S50 Pro main unit weighs 2.8 kg and is aimed more directly at deep-sky performance.

Consider the original S50 when

Your priority is an accessible 50 mm Seestar for conventional deep-sky, lunar and solar imaging and you do not require the Pro model’s 4K dual-camera system, 2.8° telephoto field, 128 GB storage or longer battery rating.

What can the S50 Pro wide-angle camera capture?

The 4K wide camera covers a 63° portrait field and supports Milky Way arches, Milky Way time-lapse, star trails, wide-field live stacking and panoramic output up to 8K. It also assists the telephoto system with target location and tracking.

Does the Seestar S50 Pro use a Sony IMX585 telephoto sensor?

No. ZWO specifies the telephoto sensor as the OmniVision OS08B10, with a 1/1.2-inch format, 2.9 μm pixels and 8.3 MP resolution. The wide-angle camera uses the Sony IMX586.

What does Smart Enhancement do?

Smart Enhancement processes an image that the telescope has actually captured. It can reduce noise and refine stars; the editing tools also provide star reduction and star removal. ZWO describes this as non-generative processing rather than creating an artificial sky image.

Can it take 60-second exposures?

Yes, but 60-second exposures are supported only in Equatorial Mode. A suitable equatorial support and accurate polar alignment are required; inaccurate alignment can reduce tracking performance.

How much storage is actually available?

The telescope contains 128 GB of eMMC storage. After the operating system and reserved allocation, approximately 100 GB is available. Future system updates can change the usable amount.

Will the battery always last nine hours?

Nine hours is an “up to” laboratory figure measured by ZWO above 25°C in Alt-Azimuth Mode with telephoto stargazing enabled. Cold conditions, dew-heater use, operating mode and other loads can shorten real-world runtime.

Is the supplied tripod different from the original S50 tripod?

Yes. The S50 Pro includes a two-section tripod with two selectable leg angles. This gives it a wider adjustment range and lets it use a broader stance when the surface or setup benefits from it.

Can the S50 Pro be controlled by third-party astronomy software?

It supports the open ASCOM Alpaca protocol and can connect with compatible software such as N.I.N.A. Compatibility and available functions can depend on the software version and Seestar firmware.

Can it safely photograph the Sun?

Yes, only with the supplied magnetic solar filter correctly installed. Never point the main camera at the Sun without the solar filter, as unfiltered sunlight can permanently damage the telescope.

What affects the final astrophotography result?

Light pollution, clouds, atmospheric transparency, wind, focus, alignment, target altitude, exposure settings and total stacking time all matter. Milky Way detail in particular requires suitably dark conditions; no telescope can recover detail that local sky brightness completely overwhelms.

Important use notes

  • Always fit the magnetic solar filter before aiming the main camera at the Sun.
  • At 1×, both cameras capture 3840 × 2160 output; resolution reduces at 2× and 4× digital magnification, and the live preview stream is 1080p.
  • NFC setup requires a compatible phone with NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and location services enabled. NFC performance varies with phone antenna position.
  • Check the weather before leaving Plan Mode unattended. Sudden rain, clouds or strong wind can interrupt a task, and the telescope does not automatically power off for changing weather.
  • Handle the telescope as a precision optical and electronic instrument. Avoid impact, drops and strong shock.
